30 September – SLG Convent receives planning approval

The Community of the Sisters of the Love of God (SLG) Convent in Oxford recently received full planning approval for the proposed redevelopment of the convent and its grounds.

The Convent consists of more than 15 buildings including a Chapel, some of which date back to the 1890’s and are of significant local heritage interest.

Ubu Design were appointed by SLG Convent to develop landscape proposals as part of the redevelopment of the existing convent.  Working closely with MEB Design and the wider project team, Ubu have produced a landscape strategy to respond to the needs of the convent community which can be developed over time by the sisters.

The landscape proposals will provide a high quality sequence of spaces and help stitch the new development into its surroundings, while respecting the existing character and setting of the convent grounds. These proposals have been developed through a series of design workshops to provide a scheme that responds to the needs of the sisters, addresses concerns over future access, and creates an attractive sequence of external spaces reflecting the sustainable ethos of the community.

As part of the redevelopment and refurbishments, a new cloister space is to be created with a focal water feature, providing a providing a tranquil garden space for quiet contemplation.

Work is expected to start on site at the end of 2019.
