Hythe Mills, Colchester
Hythe Mills is a purpose built student accommodation development in Hawkins Road, Colchester. This development is located right in the heart of the city and part of the University of Essex Colchester Campus.
The Hawkins Road PBSA scheme was designed by HNW Architects, with Ubu designed landscape and spans over 92,000 sq ft. The development includes 286 student beds – a mix of cluster and studio rooms across nine floors. Amenities include social, study and gaming spaces, indoor and outdoor fitness spaces and a management suite.
The state-of-the-art development incorporates cutting edge technology and engineering to target reduced emissions and hit the Group’s sustainability objectives. Watkin Jones has achieved this by using recycled materials and innovative solutions.
One of the key features is the implementation of Air Source Heat Pump heating for the hot water system, which eliminates the need for gas usage. A grey-water irrigation system has also been integrated to efficiently utilise water resources.
Supporting sustainable transport, the Hawkins Road development includes charging points for electric cars, and has achieved a BREEAM “Excellent” rating.
Watkin Jones delivered the scheme on behalf of its clients Moorfield Group and Melberry Developments and practical completion was achieved in summer 2023.
