15 May 2019 -Southampton Solent University
We are proud to see our scheme for Southampton Solent University, Leisure Centre completed. The New specialist sports building supports the University’s ambition to increase its profile and standing in the British Universities and Colleges Sport league and enables excellence for the teaching of sport, health and fitness related degree programs.
The project is part of an ongoing estates development plan which will transform the East Park Terrace campus. Working with ArchitecturePLB, ARUP and Morgan Sindall, our design delivers a strong relationship between the buildings form and the surrounding spaces. With the indentation and geometry of the building drawn into the landscape with paving bands, it delivers a strong contemporary piece of urban design and public realm that deals with dramatic level changes, for both vehicular and pedestrian movement. The scheme is located on the northern extent of Southampton Solent University’s East Park Terrace Campus in a sensitive heritage setting opposite a listed park.
As the new sports facility is part of a broader campus it was vital that the landscape integrated with the wider masterplan, as well as having its own identity and character. This has been achieved through the choice of materials and use of a coordinated palette.
