Watersplash, New Forest

Located just outside Brockenhurst, Watersplash is a former hotel sensitively restored and extended to offer luxury retirement living, comprising new villa buildings, mews cottages, self contained apartments and shared facilities. The scheme has sought to adopt the principles and design criteria of the Lifetime Homes design standard and delivers on the aims of the Housing our Ageing Population Panel for Innovation (HAPPI) report to provide homes that meet the needs and raise the housing aspirations of older people. Ubu were brought in at the discharge of conditions stage to help achieve the clients vision of a high quality landscape setting with a series of intimate and interesting garden spaces for new residents, and to draw up the detailed package of landscape information.  Alongside hard and soft landscaping design, the scheme included facilitating access for residents to nearby shops and facilities, dealing with a level change across the site, and the particular challenge of sloping ground around the villas, addressed through a planting design composed of a high concentration of shade tolerant plants that offer seasonal interest.
